Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven stories with clear resolutions; this is a meditation on loss and displacement.

  • You're looking for uplifting, feel-good escapism rather than deeply moving but heavy subject matter.

About this book

Nuri is a beekeeper and Afra is an artist living in Aleppo, Syria. They lead a simple life rich in family and friends—Nuri tends his hives in the countryside while Afra sells her landscape paintings at the market. When war destroys everything they love, they are forced to flee their home. Their escape becomes a harrowing journey when Afra loses her sight during the conflict. Nuri must navigate not only her grief but also a perilous route through Turkey and Greece toward an uncertain future in Britain. Their only hope lies with Nuri's cousin Mustafa, who has established an apiary in Yorkshire and is teaching fellow refugees beekeeping. As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they confront both the pain of their devastating loss and dangers that test their resilience. They must find their way back to each other—a path once familiar but now foreign due to displacement and heartache. The novel explores how ordinary lives can be utterly upended and follows their journey toward an uncertain future.
