Perfect for you if...

  • You love WWII historical fiction with female protagonists doing real, consequential work beyond the expected roles.
  • You're drawn to books where personal stakes (marriage, family) collide with wartime duty and create genuine moral conflict.
  • You appreciate tightly plotted mysteries where the tension comes from not knowing who to trust, even among colleagues you work alongside daily.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer lighter historical fiction without the emotional weight of betrayal and fractured relationships.
  • You're looking for romance as the central plot rather than a secondary thread complicating the main story.
  • You want fast-paced action sequences over the slower burn of espionage and code-breaking intrigue.

About this book

In 1942, teacher Hana Phillips is recruited to Bletchley Park to contribute to the war effort. As a talented linguist, she is assigned to crack Japanese naval codes, work that boosts her confidence but strains her already troubled marriage. Hana is then given a secret mission: a mole within her team is sharing intelligence with the enemy, and she must identify them. With no one to trust and knowing that others, including her own father, have been targeted in previous attempts to find the spy, Hana races against time to uncover the truth, regardless of the personal consequences. Set during World War Two at Bletchley Park, this novel explores themes of love, courage, secrets, and betrayal.
