Perfect for you if...

  • You loved All the Light We Cannot See or The Nightingale and want a WWII story set beyond the usual European theatres.
  • You're drawn to stories about women navigating impossible moral choices and finding strength in unexpected friendships during wartime.
  • You appreciate character-driven historical fiction with meticulous research that never overwhelms the emotional core of the narrative.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven page-turners over intimate, introspective explorations of how war changes the heart.
  • You're looking for historical fiction with detailed battle sequences or military strategy rather than the human cost of occupation.
  • You want lighter reads. This is emotionally demanding and grapples with the trauma of displacement and divided loyalties.

About this book

In 1941 Shanghai, Zofia's husband Haru is conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army, leaving her to survive alone in the Japanese-occupied city. Far from home and surrounded by war, she forms an unexpected bond with Hilly, a young refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria. As violence escalates in Shanghai, the two women seek shelter with Theo, Zofia's American employer. With each passing day, the horrors of war and Haru's absence transform Zofia's world and her feelings. She must confront a difficult question: can she still love someone who has become the enemy? This novel explores the impossible choices people face during wartime, set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation of Shanghai during World War II.
