About this book

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces landed at Normandy, with naval engineer Edward Ellsberg playing a crucial role in the operation. Before World War II, Ellsberg had established himself as an innovator in naval engineering, specializing in the salvage and rescue of sunken vessels. After more than a decade of service, he had retired to private life. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Ellsberg traveled to Washington, DC to offer his services again. In The Far Shore, Rear Admiral Ellsberg describes the detailed preparation and engineering efforts behind the Normandy Invasion, focusing on maintaining the supply of men and materials to the beaches and into Europe. He worked to exhaustion managing complex engineering challenges while aware that countless lives depended on his planning. His work earned him the Distinguished Service Medal and an appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Written by someone who witnessed the realities of war firsthand, the book covers the invasion's brutal conditions and the contributions of one of World War II's lesser-known figures.
