Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork constabulary is sent as a diplomat and ambassador to Uberwald, a mysterious, fat-rich country, complete with ruby tights. When an attempted assassination and theft occur, Vimes pursues the case from the halls of Discworld royalty to the fat mines of Uberwald, where lard is extracted from underground seams alongside tusks, teeth, and other precious ivory artifacts. However, he is pursued by werewolves—bright, fast, and toothy creatures closing in on his trail. The novel explores monarchy, fascism, communism, capitalism, oil wealth, ethnic identities, Russian plays, immigration, and other social and political themes. This is the fifth book in the City Watch series, though Discworld novels can be read in any order.
