The First Bridge Too Far: The Battle of Primosole Bridge 1943

This narrative examines the Battle of Primosole Bridge in Sicily (13-16 July 1943), one of the bloodiest and hardest fought battles for British airborne troops in World War Two. The battle marked the first instance of opposing elite paratroopers engaging each other in combat, as British paratroopers of the 1st Parachute Brigade fought German paratroopers in a see-saw battle across the Mediterranean landscape. The British 'Red Devils' faced their German 'Green Devils' counterparts in a battle of attrition critical to the Allies' first invasion of occupied Europe.
