Curt Hinton leaves his job at a struggling newspaper to become head of corporate communications at Balco, the Bay Area Logistics Company, after his best friend Angel Reddish offers him the position. The two former college roommates have maintained their close friendship for years. On Curt's first day at Balco, he learns that Angel was killed the previous night during a carjacking. While writing a press release about the crime, Curt realizes the carjacking was not random but a targeted attack by professional killers. Neither the Oakland Police nor the FBI can explain who murdered Angel or why. As Curt investigates his best friend's death, he uncovers multiple possible suspects and discovers that his new employer is involved in far more danger than he anticipated.
