James Fremantle, an English colonel on leave from Her Majesty's army, spent three months behind Confederate lines during the American Civil War. Within three hours of arriving in America, he witnessed a lynched bandit. Over the following months, Fremantle traveled from the war's western regions eastward, observing major events including the Battle of Gettysburg, which he watched from a tree outside General Hood's tent using a telescope. During his tour, Fremantle met Robert E. Lee, P. G. T. Beauregard, Jefferson Davis, and numerous other Confederate leaders. His diary documents these encounters and observations of the conflict. The book includes an introduction and notes by Walter Lord.
