Volume 1 of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's work presents an account of Soviet history based on the author's arrest and interrogation, along with testimony from 227 witnesses. The book documents the vast system of secret police and political repression that operated within Soviet society. Solzhenitsyn describes his own experience as a decorated Red Army captain who was arrested and interrogated by Soviet secret police. Through this personal narrative and collected testimonies, the work traces the origins of the concentration camp system, arguing that it was integral to the Soviet state from Lenin's era onward, not merely under Stalin. The book examines what Solzhenitsyn calls the "almost invisible country" of the Gulag—a network of prisons and camps administered by secret police and woven throughout Soviet society.
