Perfect for you if...

  • You love travel writing that goes beyond guidebooks and captures the real people, politics, and oddities of a place.
  • You're drawn to solo adventure narratives where the writer's observations matter as much as the destination.
  • You appreciate Theroux's particular blend of humour, cynicism, and genuine curiosity about how people actually live.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer cheerful, inspirational travel memoirs that celebrate the joy of wandering without examining harder truths.
  • You want practical travel advice or tips on visiting these islands yourself.
  • You're looking for a fast-paced adventure story rather than a writer's reflections on culture, colonialism, and change.

About this book

Paul Theroux, author of The Great Railway Bazaar, explores the South Pacific by collapsible kayak in this eighteen-month journey. Beginning in New Zealand's rain forests, Theroux paddles alone across fifty-one islands, ultimately reaching Hawaii thousands of miles away. His route takes him over isolated atolls, through harbors and shark-filled waters, and along treacherous coastlines. During his travels, he meets the king of Tonga, encounters street gangs in Auckland, and investigates a cargo cult in Vanuatu. The journey spans from Australia to Tahiti, Fiji, Easter Island, and other Pacific destinations, combining observations of island life with accounts of high adventure.
