Perfect for you if...

  • You've read Holocaust memoirs and want a novelised account that doesn't shy away from the camp's horrors or the humanity that persisted within them.
  • You're drawn to stories where ordinary people find ways to resist, even when the cost is their life.
  • You loved The Tattooist of Auschwitz or The Nightingale and want another meticulously researched historical novel that centres a woman's courage.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need emotional distance from heavy subject matter and prefer your historical fiction to focus on survival rather than intimate loss.
  • You're looking for an uplifting or redemptive reading experience. This book is brutally honest about what happened in the camp.
  • You find romance subplots distracting from the historical stakes, or you're uncomfortable with love stories set in settings of mass atrocity.

About this book

In November 1943, Rachael Kisch arrives at Auschwitz with her younger brother Hannes and other Dutch Jews. Separated from Hannes upon arrival, Rachael is determined to find him. She befriends Ludwig Albin, a Polish farmer forced to work in the Sonderkommando unit. Though kept apart by barbed wire fences, their relationship deepens as they work with camp resistance members to aid fellow inmates and resist the SS. The presence of SS officers Otto Moll and Irma Grese creates constant danger. As the war turns against the Nazis, Rachael and Ludwig face uncertain survival. The novel follows their struggle to endure until Russian liberation, their search for Hannes, and the risks they take through their resistance work. Set against the horrors of Auschwitz, the story centers on one woman's love and courage amid a family torn apart by war.
