Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction that weaves real historical figures into intimate, fictional narratives that feel completely plausible.
  • You're drawn to stories about colonialism, power dynamics, and how empire shapes personal relationships in complex ways.
  • You appreciate slow-burn character studies where secrets and betrayals unfold through conversation and observation rather than dramatic plot twists.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer page-turners with fast pacing. This novel is deliberately contemplative and layered, building tension through revelation rather than action.
  • You're uncomfortable with stories that explore sexuality and infidelity in depth. These themes are central to the narrative.
  • You want clear heroes and villains. The moral ambiguity here runs throughout, and Maugham himself is neither sympathetic nor villainous.

About this book

Set in 1921, this novel follows Lesley Hamlyn and her husband Robert, a lawyer and war veteran, living at Cassowary House in the Straits Settlement of Penang. When writer W. Somerset Maugham arrives for an extended visit with his secretary Gerald, tensions emerge that threaten to disrupt multiple lives. Maugham, struggling with hidden homosexuality and an unhappy marriage, arrives seeking material for his next book. He suspects an affair in the Hamleys' marriage and becomes intrigued by Lesley's past connection to Chinese revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat Sen. As their friendship deepens and Lesley shares her experiences in the Straits, Maugham uncovers a complex story involving war, scandal, and the trial of an Englishwoman accused of murder. Based on real events, the novel explores themes of race, gender, sexuality, and power under colonial rule, examining love and friendship within that context.
