About this book

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, housekeeping was among the most prestigious—and most demanding—positions available to women. Far removed from fictional portrayals, real housekeepers faced demanding mistresses, inadequate wages, job insecurity, and exhausting physical work. Their stories have largely gone untold. The Housekeeper's Tale draws on secret diaries, unpublished letters, and service archives from Britain's stately homes to document the lives of five working women who managed prominent households. Dorothy Doar served as housekeeper to the 1st Duke and Duchess of Sutherland at Trentham Hall, Staffordshire, during the Regency period. Sarah Wells, a deaf elderly woman, oversaw Uppark in West Sussex during the Victorian era. Ellen Penketh worked as cook-housekeeper at Erddig Hall in the Welsh borders during the Edwardian period. Hannah Mackenzie managed Wrest Park in Bedfordshire, which became Britain's first country-house war hospital, supported by playwright J. M. Barrie. Grace Higgens served as cook-housekeeper to the Bloomsbury set at Charleston farmhouse in East Sussex for fifty years, spanning the Second World War. Through these accounts, Tessa Boase reveals the personal sacrifices, conflicts, and ambitions that defined these women's careers.
