Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction with visceral, lived-in settings and strong female protagonists who aren't waiting to be rescued.
  • You're drawn to atmospheric Gothic stories that balance intimate character work with genuine danger and stakes.
  • You appreciate nuanced explorations of how women carved out agency and healing through knowledge in eras that denied them both.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots over character development and atmospheric world-building.
  • You want romance as the central plot thread rather than Jane's discovery of purpose through healing work.
  • You're uncomfortable with depictions of abuse, pregnancy trauma, or the predatory behaviour that drives the story's tension.

About this book

Scotland, 1789. Jane arrives on the sands of Myreton bloodied, pregnant, and fleeing cruelty. Three reclusive brothers take her in, and Grace, the village healer, tends to her. Working in Grace's herb garden and healing room, Jane discovers an aptitude for healing and finds purpose and belonging. However, her past catches up with her. A church elder spreads rumors of scandal through the village, and the man from whom Jane fled is determined to find her and reclaim her. Set between the coastal parish of Myreton and the underworlds of Edinburgh and Leith, the novel follows Jane's coming-of-age against a backdrop of 18th-century Scottish life, exploring themes of survival, resilience, and the struggle for freedom.
