About this book

The Idea Factory traces the history of Bell Labs, the research and development wing of AT&T, from its founding in the 1920s through its closure in the 1980s. During this period, Bell Labs was the world's largest laboratory for developing new ideas, producing innovations including the transistor, the laser, digital communications, and cellular telephony. Jon Gertner examines the origins of some of the twentieth century's most important inventions through the lives and work of key figures at Bell Labs: Mervin Kelly, Bill Shockley, Claude Shannon, John Pierce, and Bill Baker. The book explores how these scientists and engineers approached technological innovation and the management practices that supported their work. By studying Bell Labs' approach to research and development, the book offers insight into how organizations can effectively invest in innovation and foster breakthrough discoveries.
