The Jungle follows Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian slaughterhouse worker who immigrates to turn-of-the-century Chicago seeking freedom and prosperity. Instead, he encounters meager wages, filthy and dangerous working conditions, and mounting debt. Jurgis and his wife, Ona, struggle to survive in harsh urban circumstances. Based on factual research, the novel exposes working conditions and unsanitary practices in the meatpacking industry. Privately published in 1906, it became an international bestseller and prompted significant reforms, including the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. The work is considered one of the most influential novels ever written.
