Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction grounded in real resistance stories, especially ones where ordinary people fight back through culture rather than weapons.
  • You were moved by All the Light We Cannot See or The Tattooist of Auschwitz and want another WWII novel that centres female friendship and survival.
  • You believe books matter—not as decoration, but as lifelines—and want to read about people who literally died protecting them.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your historical fiction to focus on military strategy or grand historical events rather than intimate, character-driven survival stories.
  • You find WWII and Holocaust fiction too emotionally draining, even when told with hope woven through the darkness.
  • You're looking for a light read. This book is tender but unsparing about loss, fear, and the costs of resistance.

About this book

Set in WWII Warsaw, this novel follows Zofia, who has always found solace in books and her close friendship with Janina. When Nazi occupation brings bombs and destruction to the city, Zofia becomes determined to save books from the wreckage. She hides volumes away and establishes a secret book club, refusing to abandon her love of reading even as Janina is forced into the newly formed ghetto. As Warsaw moves toward liberation, the danger intensifies for Zofia, Janina, and their families. Zofia fights to protect her friend and preserve her culture and community through literature—the only weapon available to them. The novel is inspired by the true story of an underground library in WWII Warsaw. Madeline Martin is the author of The Last Bookshop in London and The Librarian Spy.
