Perfect for you if...

  • You want an unflinching look at modern combat from someone who was actually there, not filtered through Hollywood.
  • You've read American Sniper and want the fuller picture of SEAL Team THREE's fight in Iraq from another operator's perspective.
  • You respect military memoirs that balance visceral action with genuine reflection on what war costs and changes in a person.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a pacifist critique of the Iraq War; this is a soldier's justified account of his service.
  • You prefer sanitised war stories without the blood, fear, and moral complexity that comes with combat.
  • You need a fast-paced thriller rather than a thoughtful, granular minute-by-minute retelling of specific missions.

About this book

The Last Punisher is a first-person memoir by Kevin Lacz, a Navy SEAL sniper who served with SEAL Team THREE during the Iraq War. Lacz was part of the unit that included Chris Kyle, Mike Monsoor, Ryan Job, and Marc Lee—known as "The Punishers"—who played a key role in the 2006 Battle of Ramadi. The memoir details Lacz's deployment from his first mission through combat operations in Ramadi, covering the heated firefights, extreme conditions, and daily dangers his team faced. Lacz describes how his unit secured pivotal locations during the battle and how the men formed strong bonds throughout their tour. Beyond combat accounts, Lacz reflects on how his military experiences shaped him personally and his pride in his service during one of the country's most difficult military campaigns. The book also covers his return to the United States, where he appeared in a film adaptation directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper.
