Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction rooted in real events, especially stories about women caught in the machinery of superstition and fear.
  • You're drawn to atmospheric Scottish settings and characters who find moments of genuine connection amid isolation and suspicion.
  • You appreciate slow-burn narratives where a community's whispers prove more destructive than any supernatural force.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with clear antagonists. This is a quiet tragedy about how ordinary people become dangerous.
  • You want escapist fantasy with magic systems. This is grounded historical fiction about the cost of being different.
  • You need hopeful endings. This is inspired by a real execution and doesn't shy away from that weight.

About this book

Scottish Highlands, 1727. After a fire kills her father, Aila and her mother Janet move to the remote parish of Loth, north-west of Inverness. Aila bears visible scars from the fire, while Janet struggles with her mental state. The arrival of a new minister brings unwanted attention rather than acceptance. Their isolation shifts when a group of travelling entertainers from Edinburgh, led by the charismatic Jack, arrives in the area. For the first time since her father's death, Aila finds joy, friendship, and hope. However, in this small community, faith and rumour prove more powerful than truth. The Last Witch of Scotland is inspired by the true story of the last person executed for witchcraft in Britain. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice against the backdrop of late renaissance Scotland and Highland history.
