Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to authentic historical magic practices and want to understand the roots of American witchcraft beyond Wicca and modern traditions.
  • You collect folklore and ethnobotany texts, or you're researching Pennsylvania Dutch culture and immigrant healing traditions.
  • You practice hoodoo, Santeria, or eclectic paganism and want to trace your craft back to its documented American sources.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for spell books written for modern witches. This is a historical document, not a contemporary grimoire with 21st-century language.
  • You need step-by-step instructions formatted for ease. The text is dense, archaic, and requires patience to parse.
  • You're uncomfortable with folk remedies that mix practical herbalism with supernatural claims. This book treats them as one thing.

About this book

Originally published in 1820 near Reading, Pennsylvania, under the German title Der Lange Verborgene Freund, this text was written by immigrant Johann George Hohman. The Long-Lost Friend is a collection of herbal formulas and magical prayers drawn from Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic traditions and pow-wow healers. It combines household remedies with charms and incantations intended to treat common ailments and address rural problems. This grimoire has influenced practices within hoodoo, Santeria, Paganism, and other faiths. The definitive edition includes both the original German text and the 1856 English translation, plus over one hundred additional charms and recipes from the 1837 Skippacksville edition and other sources. It also features extensive notes on the recipes, magic, Pennsylvania Dutch customs, and the origins of the charms, along with indices for general purposes and ingredients and explanations of specialized illness terminology. The volume addresses interests in folklore, ethnobotany, magic, witchcraft, and American history.
