Perfect for you if...

  • You love real history that reads like a heist thriller, with genuine heroes doing impossible things under impossible pressure.
  • You're fascinated by art and culture, and want to know what happened to Europe's masterpieces during WWII.
  • You enjoyed the George Clooney film and want the fuller, richer story that the movie couldn't quite capture.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You find WWII stories emotionally draining and prefer to avoid the darker chapters of history altogether.
  • You're looking for a military narrative focused on combat and strategy rather than a cultural preservation story.
  • You want a fast-paced thriller and don't have patience for historical detail and archival research.

About this book

During World War II, as Adolf Hitler's armies advanced across Europe, they systematically sought and collected the continent's finest art treasures. Hitler catalogued artworks he intended to acquire and those he planned to destroy, which he labeled "degenerate" works. In response, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others—known as the Monuments Men—worked behind enemy lines to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of cultural heritage. Often unarmed and operating in dangerous conditions, they raced against time to rescue invaluable artworks. This account focuses on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, following six Monuments Men and their mission to protect Europe's art from Nazi destruction.
