About this book

Agatha Christie's debut novel introduces detective Hercule Poirot, a Belgian refugee from the Great War who has settled in England near the home of Emily Cavendish, who assisted him in establishing his new life. The novel also features Inspector (later Chief Inspector) Japp and Arthur Hastings, Poirot's friend who arrives as a guest at Cavendish's home. When Emily Cavendish is killed, Poirot applies his detective abilities to uncover the truth behind her death. This novel marks the beginning of Poirot's cases and serves as the setting for Curtain, which depicts his final case.
