Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate historical fiction rooted in specific time and place, with lush period details that bring 1830s Italy to life.
  • You're drawn to stories about women navigating constrained lives and finding agency within impossible circumstances.
  • You enjoy quiet, introspective narratives where inner emotional landscapes matter as much as external plot.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want fast-paced plots with dramatic confrontations. This novel moves at the steady pace of monastic life, not with urgency.
  • You're looking for romance as the primary story engine. The love here is muted, distant, and complicated by duty and acceptance.
  • You prefer contemporary settings or fantasy worlds. This is grounded, historical realism set in a very specific place and era.

About this book

Winner of the Italian PEN Prize, this novel follows Agata, daughter of an impoverished aristocrat in early nineteenth-century Italy. When her romance with wealthy Giacomo Lepre is deemed unacceptable by their families, Agata's mother takes her from Messina to Naples seeking royal support. During the voyage, captained by Englishman James Garson, Agata confides her troubles to him. Rejected by the king, she is forced to enter the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Stilita. Within the convent, marked by internal conflict and ancient feuds, Agata finds solace in cultivating medicinal herbs and the rhythms of monastic life. She reads books James sends her and follows news of Italy's political struggles. Though she has accepted her vocation, Agata remains divided between her desire for spiritual devotion and her yearning to engage with the world. Her feelings for James, present only as a distant correspondent, gradually overshadow her former attachment to Lepre, creating an internal conflict between her commitment to religious life and her unresolved emotions.
