About this book

Madeleine Grant, a Londoner studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, marries French journalist Giles Martin. As they raise their son, Olivier, they hope for a stable future until World War II reaches France. When war breaks out, Giles joins the resistance and sends Madeleine and Olivier to England for safety. Madeleine finds work teaching French at a secondary school. After a devastating loss, she accepts a request from the ministry to support the war effort and returns to France, hoping to find Giles alive and to strike back against the Nazis. This novel follows Madeleine as she faces extraordinary challenges while fighting to survive and resist during the war.
