About this book

Inspired by true stories of World War II, this historical fiction novel follows Anna Kowalski, a Polish Resistance member in Warsaw in 1942. After witnessing the destruction of her hometown, Anna is tasked with smuggling children out of the Warsaw Ghetto through the sewers to safety. During her work, Anna meets Johnnie Nowak, an RAF pilot who escaped from a prisoner of war camp. She helps him leave Warsaw, but is soon captured by the SS and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. There she faces brutal conditions under a female guard known as The Beast. When Anna is transferred to another camp, she is unexpectedly reunited with Johnnie. Together they devise an escape plan that carries extreme risk. The novel explores whether Anna and Johnnie can survive the war and find freedom together, offering insight into the experiences of prisoners of war held by the Nazis during World War II.
