About this book

An American boy with impossible dreams is caught up in the Spanish Civil War in this historical coming-of-age novel and sequel to The Palace at the End of the Sea. In Barcelona in 1936, Theo helps Anarchist workers resist an army attempting to overthrow the democratically elected government and reunites with his true love, Maria. His joy is short-lived when the Anarchists turn against him, driven by a rival for Maria's affection. Theo escapes to England and enrolls at Oxford, but his heart remains in Spain. When his former schoolmate Esmond offers him the chance to fight the Fascists, Theo abandons his studies to return. Unprepared for the brutal reality of war, Theo's spirit and hope are tested. Back in Barcelona, he faces a final terrible choice that will shape the rest of his life.
