The Seamstress: A Novel

Sisters Emília and Luzia dos Santos are seamstresses in the backcountry of Brazil, where land barons and outlaw cangaceiros create violence that traps innocent people. Both sisters wish to escape their small town, but their lives diverge dramatically when Luzia is abducted by cangaceiros. Emília marries Degas Coelho, a wealthy and politically powerful man, and moves to the seaside city of Recife. Luzia, forced into a nomadic life with the cangaceiros, comes to view them as comrades rather than criminals. As Brazil is divided following a bitter presidential election, Emília must conceal her connection to her notorious sister, while Luzia's alliances deepen her involvement in danger. Despite time and distance, Luzia entrusts Emília with a significant secret. When Luzia's life is threatened, Emília is willing to risk everything to protect her. The novel explores the bond between the sisters through themes of love, courage, loyalty, and survival.
