Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction rooted in a specific time and place, especially stories that centre women's solidarity and resilience.
  • You're drawn to atmospheric settings like turn-of-the-century New Orleans and the glamour and danger of Mardi Gras.
  • You appreciate slow-burn character development where friendship becomes as compelling as any external conflict.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven stories with constant action, as this builds tension gradually through character relationships and secrets.
  • You want a romance as the central storyline, since this is fundamentally about female friendship and personal independence.
  • You're uncomfortable with organised crime, gambling debts, and the darker underbelly of historical settings.

About this book

Set in 1900 New Orleans against the backdrop of Les Mysterieuses, the first all-female Mardi Gras krewe, this historical novel follows two women from different backgrounds who form an unexpected bond. Alice Butterworth arrives in New Orleans from Chicago, pregnant and abandoned by her husband, seeking work as a sewing instructor at a local orphanage. Constance Halstead, a young widow burdened by her late husband's gambling debts to the Black Hand—the gangsters controlling Storyville—meets Alice at the orphanage and offers her lodging in exchange for help creating a gown for the krewe's Leap Year ball. As the women work together on the gown, which becomes a symbol of their growing independence, Constance's past threatens to unravel. Her husband's death remains a dangerous mystery, and the Black Hand's debts remain unsettled. When a secret emerges during the Mardi Gras festivities, it deepens Alice and Constance's connection while endangering the new lives they are building. The novel explores the strength women draw from and inspire in each other during a time of social change and restricted opportunities.
