About this book

This collection contains nine short stories by Clifford D. Simak, a Grand Master of the Science Fiction Writers of America and author of Way Station and City. Simak was a major figure in establishing science fiction as a recognized genre, alongside contemporaries Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and Ray Bradbury. The title story follows Cheviot Sherwood, a man stranded on a planet without means of escape or a working radio. Rather than despair, he settles in to gather food, build shelter, and collect the planet's abundant diamonds. When an unfamiliar ship lands, he sees both salvation and an opportunity to claim the valuable vessel for himself—though his rescuer has identical intentions. The volume also includes the short works "Eternity Lost," "Shotgun Cure," and "Paradise," among others. Simak received three Hugo Awards, a Nebula Award, an International Fantasy Award, and a Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award.
