Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate novels where character psychology matters more than plot momentum, and where a person's encounter with another culture becomes the real story.
  • You've lived abroad or felt the pull of somewhere far away, and you want fiction that takes that yearning seriously without romanticising it.
  • You read E. M. Forster or Deborah Eisenberg and want something similarly elegant about how geography shapes identity and attachment.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward narrative with one protagonist and a clear arc. This book weaves multiple timelines and viewpoints, and some readers find that demanding.
  • You prefer plot-driven stories where things happen and escalate. The drama here is internal: moral ambiguity, self-delusion, quiet betrayals.
  • You're looking for lighter travel memoir vibes. This is serious literary fiction that doesn't shy away from how colonial power, family disappointment, and self-deception complicate even the most romantic journeys.

About this book

The Size of the World is a novel set across wartime Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Sicily, and contemporary America. It follows multiple characters—travelers, colonials, immigrants, and returned ex-pats—whose encounters with unfamiliar places and people reshape their understanding of human experience. The narrative opens with an engineer in Vietnam investigating why his company's planes are disappearing. Other storylines include a modern marriage between a Thai Muslim and an American woman that triggers family conflict, a young woman in 1920s Siam observing her brother's colonial attitudes while he prospects for tin, and the brother's later return to the United States, still drawn to Asian women. The novel explores love, loss, yearning, self-delusion, and forgiveness across these interconnected lives. In the tradition of E. M. Forster, exposure to the wider world alters how each character understands home and belonging.
