About this book

In 1920s Alaska, homesteaders Jack and Mabel struggle with the harsh conditions and their growing distance from each other. Childless and isolated, they build a snow child during the first snowfall as a moment of play. The next morning, the snow child has disappeared, but they spot a young blonde-haired girl running through the trees. The girl, who calls herself Faina, appears to be a child of the wilderness. She hunts alongside a red fox, moves swiftly across snow, and survives alone in the Alaskan landscape. As Jack and Mabel attempt to understand this mysterious child, they grow to love her as their own daughter. However, in this beautiful and violent place, appearances prove deceptive, and what they eventually discover about Faina will change all of them.
