  • You're drawn to travel writing that goes beyond sightseeing to explore the interior landscape alongside the external one.
  • You're curious about Buddhist philosophy but want it woven through narrative and lived experience rather than taught as doctrine.
  • You appreciate lyrical prose that treats nature observation and spiritual questioning with equal weight and attention.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a conventional wildlife adventure with clear narrative momentum and a definitive ending.
  • You're looking for practical travel tips or a guide to trekking in the Himalayas.
  • You prefer lighter reading without sustained reflection on mortality, impermanence, and the meaning of human struggle.

About this book

In 1973, Peter Matthiessen and field biologist George Schaller traveled into the remote mountains of Nepal to study the Himalayan blue sheep and seek out the rare snow leopard. Matthiessen, a student of Zen Buddhism, undertook the journey as both a naturalist expedition and a spiritual quest to find the Lama of Shey at an ancient shrine on Crystal Mountain. As the climb progresses, Matthiessen documents both his external journey through the Himalayas and his internal spiritual path, exploring Buddhist perspectives on reality, suffering, impermanence, and beauty. This Penguin Classics edition includes an introduction by travel writer and novelist Pico Iyer. Winner of the National Book Award.
