The eighth novel in Winston Graham's Poldark series, set in Cornwall in 1810. The Poldark family expects Ross to return from his mission with Wellington's army in Portugal when their lives are disrupted by Jeremy's rescue of a stranger from the sea. Stephen Carrington's arrival at the Poldark household affects the entire family, particularly Jeremy and his sister Clowance, the children of Ross and Demelza. Stephen's presence introduces them to a new world marked by both love and danger. This novel continues the story after the fifth TV series and is followed by the ninth book in the series, The Miller's Dance.
