Two reclusive sisters live in The Birches, a grand 1920s mansion that once featured a ballroom, tennis courts, and swimming pool. After their father's suicide during the 1929 crash, the family converted the summer home into a permanent retreat. Decades later, Judith has become a prominent New York socialite whose nerves are deteriorating, while Lois remains at the mansion, writing mystery novels to support herself. When Judith moves in with her sister to recover from a nervous breakdown, she becomes terrified of an unnamed threat and seals her windows and locks her doors. A woman is soon discovered dead in the pool—a stranger who bears a striking resemblance to Judith.
