Perfect for you if...

  • You want a Holocaust story that centres survival and love rather than despair, without minimising the horrors.
  • You're drawn to intimate historical fiction based on real people, especially underheard voices like Lale Sokolov's.
  • You appreciate novels that show ordinary people making extraordinary choices under impossible circumstances.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need emotional distance from the Holocaust or prefer your historical fiction to sidestep atrocity altogether.
  • You struggle with books depicting systematic violence and the machinery of genocide in graphic detail.
  • You prefer fast-paced plots over character-driven narratives that linger in moments of quiet humanity.

About this book

Based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov, this novel follows a Slovakian Jew forcibly transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1942. When his captors discover he speaks several languages, he is assigned to work as a tattooist, marking fellow prisoners with identification numbers. Imprisoned for over two and a half years, Lale witnesses atrocities and brutality alongside acts of bravery and compassion. He uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to sustain other prisoners. In July 1942, he meets Gita, a young woman assigned prisoner number 34902, and vows to survive and marry her. The novel depicts Lale's experiences as the man who tattooed thousands of prisoners with what became a potent symbol of the Holocaust. It explores the extremes of human behavior—calculated brutality alongside selfless acts of love—and serves as a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest conditions.
