Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in WWII history but want immediacy over analysis, hearing from someone actually there rather than historians writing decades later.
  • You appreciate primary sources and want to understand how information reached the American public during the war.
  • You admire William Shirer's later work like The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and want to see his reporting in its raw, unpolished form.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a narrative history with analysis and context. These are broadcasts, not a coherent book with explanations connecting the dots.
  • You prefer listening to audio over reading transcribed speech, which can feel choppy on the page.
  • You want deep dives into military strategy or political theory. These are dispatches meant for evening news, not academic study.

About this book

William L. Shirer was the first journalist hired by CBS to cover World War II in Europe, where he worked as a news broadcaster for over a decade. This book compiles two and a half years of his wartime radio broadcasts from the period. Shirer reported from Nazi-occupied and war-torn Europe, including coverage of Hitler's invasion of Austria and the Anschluss, as well as the first reports to the United States on the June 1940 armistice between France and Nazi forces. His daily news roundups from Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Rome, and London documented Nazi Germany and conditions in invaded and warring nations. These broadcasts brought immediacy and vivid storytelling of World War II to American and worldwide listeners. Shirer's later works, including Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, became definitive historical accounts of the war. This collection presents his original radio broadcasts, offering contemporary perspective on the events of World War II.
