About this book

Originally published in 1956, Thoughts in Solitude examines the value of solitary life and the importance of quiet reflection in an increasingly public world. Merton argues that societies composed of people lacking inner solitude cannot be held together by love, but instead rely on violent and abusive authority. He further contends that when people are forcibly denied solitude and freedom, their society becomes corrupted by servility, resentment, and hate. The work stands alongside The Seven Storey Mountain as one of Merton's most popular writings. Merton was a Trappist monk whose diaries, social commentary, and spiritual writings remained widely read following his death in 1968.
