About this book

A prize-winning novel inspired by true WWII events. In 1938, thirty-two countries convene to address the influx of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany and Austria, but no government agrees to accept the refugees. Simultaneously, Fascist Italy introduces its racial laws. Lia Levi portrays Italy's tragic past through the story of a Jewish family in Genoa during the years of the racial laws. The family includes a would-be genius son, a disappointed and regretful mother, a wise but irresolute father, an eccentric grandfather, nosy uncles, and cousins who frequently visit. The novel explores how individuals face the darkest periods of history, whether anyone will rebel against violence and discrimination, and whether the family will find refuge if they flee persecution. The narrative examines the family's doubts, passions, weaknesses, impulses, and betrayals as they navigate this period. Levi's storytelling offers readers an immersive view of daily life under Fascism's racial laws in Italy.
