Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to survival memoirs that focus on the intimate, ordinary moments of extraordinary circumstances rather than grand historical narratives.
  • You appreciate unreliable situations where danger sits beside absurdity, where the same person might offer both shelter and threat.
  • You want to understand how people actually lived through history, not just the broad strokes you learnt in school.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need a straightforward, chronological account with clear good guys and bad guys; Marie's story is morally messier than that.
  • You're looking for a traditional narrative arc with resolution and closure; this is fragmentary testimony recorded decades later.
  • You prefer historical fiction to primary source material; this is a direct account without authorial interpretation.

About this book

Underground in Berlin is the true account of Marie Jalowicz, a young Jewish woman who survived World War II in Berlin. In 1942, at age twenty, Jalowicz made the decision to evade the concentration camps. She removed her yellow star, assumed a false identity, and went into hiding within the city. Over the following years, Jalowicz sheltered with various people, including circus performers, communists, and Nazi sympathizers. She discovered that compassion and cruelty often coexist. Fifty years after the war, Jalowicz told her story for the first time. Narrated in her own voice, the memoir documents the surreal and sometimes absurd realities of daily life in wartime Berlin while in hiding. It offers an account of survival, isolation, and what it means to be human during extraordinary circumstances.
