About this book

Julia Baird's biography presents Victoria as a bold, unbreakable queen whose life was marked by love, heartbreak, devotion, and grief. Drawing on previously unpublished papers, the book explores the real woman behind the historical myth. Born in 1819, Victoria was fifth in line to the throne during a period of revolutionary upheaval across Europe. As a girl, she resisted her mother's control and an adviser's bullying to develop her own will. She became queen as a teenager and eagerly embraced the power the role offered. At twenty, she fell passionately in love with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and had nine children with him. She was outspoken with her ministers, overstepped conventional boundaries, and asserted her opinions. After Albert's death, she began a controversial, intimate relationship with her servant John Brown. She survived eight assassination attempts during her lifetime. As the Industrial Revolution transformed Britain and the empire expanded globally, Victoria ruled the most powerful country on earth with a decisive hand. She was a symbol of steadfastness during dramatic changes in science, technology, and democracy. The biography draws on fresh revelations about her relationship with John Brown and explores how Victoria navigated challenges including work-life balance, raising children, marital difficulties, loss, anxiety, and self-doubt.
