Perfect for you if...

  • You served in combat or have family who did, and you want an honest account that doesn't shy away from the moral weight of what happened.
  • You're interested in Vietnam history but tired of sanitised versions; this shows the confusion, fear, and dark humour soldiers actually experienced.
  • You read military memoirs for the leadership lessons and human dynamics under extreme pressure, not for glory.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a straightforward chronology of battles and military strategy; this is personal and psychological, not a tactical breakdown.
  • You prefer historical distance and analysis over raw, immediate testimony from someone who lived it.
  • You want an anti-war polemic; Bartlett documents his experiences with nuance rather than political argument.

About this book

In 1968, 1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett was reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) and stationed at the repo-depo in Bien Hoa. His unit had more helicopter support than any other in Vietnam, enabling rapid deployment at a moment's notice. Bartlett led a platoon through 1968, the most chaotic and significant year of the Vietnam War. Beyond combat itself, Bartlett faced a crisis of commitment as the war lost support both at home and among the soldiers under his command. Fifty years later, he recounts these experiences in a first-person narrative that addresses the horror, fear, anguish, and sometimes illogical humor of the war. Finalist, 2023 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards
