Andrew Schulman, a fifty-seven-year-old professional guitarist, survived a life-threatening medical crisis on July 16, 2009. After his recovery, he returned to Mount Sinai Beth Israel's ICU as a musician to work with critically ill patients. Waking the Spirit recounts Schulman's personal journey and the stories of patients and doctors he encountered during this work. The book examines how music functions in a modern hospital setting, drawing on research in neuroscience and medicine alongside Schulman's experience as a professional musician to explore music's capacity to heal the body and support spiritual awakening.
