Perfect for you if...

  • You care about feminist history and want to understand how governments have weaponised women's sexuality under the guise of morality.
  • You loved Girl, Interrupted or The Handmaid's Tale and are looking for another gripping story about women resisting institutional control.
  • You appreciate character-driven narratives that expose real historical injustices alongside intimate, personal struggles.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer light, escapist reads without heavy themes of incarceration, bodily autonomy, and state-sanctioned violence.
  • You want fast-paced plot twists over slow-burn character development and institutional critique.
  • You're looking for a romance or feel-good story. This is neither.

About this book

Set in 1940s North Carolina, this novel follows 24-year-old Ruth Foster, who is arrested and incarcerated at the State Industrial Farm Colony for Women after being accused of promiscuity—a charge she never committed. Based on the history of the American Plan, a real government program that regulated women's bodies and sexuality throughout the first half of the 20th century, the story exposes how women were imprisoned for various reasons: reported by neighbors or strangers, accused of prostitution, or simply for being unmarried, poor, or perceived as suspicious. The Colony is overseen by Superintendent Dorothy Baker, who believes she is reforming the women through medical treatment and training until they can be paroled. Inmates face solitary confinement, grueling work, and other punishments for breaking Baker's rules. Among the imprisoned are women with vastly different circumstances—some victims of assault, others imprisoned for minor infractions or circumstances beyond their control. The novel depicts both the injustice of the system and the resistance of those who refuse to accept their imprisonment, exploring themes of resilience and the fight against an oppressive institution designed to control women.
