About this book

1984 is a dystopian novel published in 1949. The story is set in Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain, now a province of the superstate Oceania. This world is characterized by perpetual war, constant government surveillance, and public manipulation under a political system called English Socialism (Ingsoc), controlled by an elite Inner Party that treats individualism and independent thinking as crimes. Winston Smith, a member of the middle-class Outer Party, lives in a one-room London apartment. He survives on black bread, synthetic meals, and Victory-branded gin. Telescreens equipped with microphones and cameras monitor citizens, enabling the Thought Police to identify threats to the regime. Children are encouraged to report suspected thought criminals, including their own parents. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth as an editor, responsible for rewriting historical records and altering photographs to match the state's constantly shifting version of history. People erased from these records become "unpersons," and original documents are destroyed in "memory holes." George Orwell (1903–1950) was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic known for lucid prose and opposition to totalitarianism. Beyond 1984, he wrote Animal Farm, The Road to Wigan Pier, and Homage to Catalonia. His work has profoundly influenced culture; terms like "Orwellian," "Big Brother," "Thought Police," and "newspeak" originated from his writing.
