Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Hollywood's golden age and want the inside story of how I Love Lucy became a cultural phenomenon.
  • You appreciate raw, honest memoirs where successful people acknowledge their mistakes rather than polish their image.
  • You're interested in television history and the technical innovations that shaped modern entertainment production.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a purely romantic portrait of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's relationship. This book doesn't shy away from the painful truth.
  • You're looking for a lighthearted celebrity memoir. Desi confronts serious personal failures and the cost of fame on his family.
  • You have no interest in 1950s television or the mechanics of early sitcom production. Much of the book focuses on these details.

About this book

This expanded edition of Desi Arnaz's memoir includes excerpts from his unpublished second memoir, a new Afterword by his daughter Lucie Arnaz, a Foreword by granddaughter Kate Luckinbill, and additional photographs. The original work and new material together present a portrait of Arnaz as a Cuban American entertainment figure and television pioneer, showing both his accomplishments and personal failings. Lucy credited him with the success of I Love Lucy and pioneering television production in its early years. Arnaz describes his life from childhood in Cuba through his career in the United States, covering both successes and failures. He recounts what he and Lucy did to convince audiences they could play husband and wife on I Love Lucy, and how the birth of their children Lucie and Desi Jr. initially brought happiness. He also addresses how their unexpected success, fame, and fortune created difficulties in their lives.
