Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical mysteries set in the 1920s with clever, ambitious female protagonists who use their expertise to solve crimes.
  • You're drawn to books where the setting and details matter as much as the plot, especially anything involving plants, poison, or the language of flowers.
  • You want something between cosy mystery and darker thriller. A puzzle to solve with real stakes and a cast of well-developed suspects.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced thrillers with constant action. This is a methodical puzzle that rewards careful reading over breakneck speed.
  • You need your romantic subplot front and centre. The chemistry with Dr. Lee is there but takes a backseat to the investigation.
  • You're squeamish about poisonings or violence against women. The murders are the emotional core of the story.

About this book

Saffron Everleigh, a brilliant botanist, returns in this historical mystery set in 1920s London. As a research assistant at the University College of London, Saffron works to advance her career in a male-dominated field. She begins her first research study with Dr. Michael Lee, investigating reports of poisonings in the countryside. When Detective Inspector Green brings her a puzzling case, Saffron discovers that multiple female victims have received bouquets containing poisonous flowers—and all have died. The bouquets may contain hidden messages encoded through floriography, the Victorian practice of communicating through flower arrangements. Each arrangement appears to carry a sinister meaning. With Dr. Lee and her best friend Elizabeth, Saffron pursues suspects across 1920s London, from a jazz club to a country estate to a theatre. As she uncovers the killer's identity, Saffron must work quickly before another deadly bouquet is sent.
