About this book

Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and armaments manufacturer. He is best known for inventing dynamite and holding 355 patents throughout his career. Nobel also owned Bofors, which he transformed from an iron and steel producer into a major manufacturer of cannons and other armaments. After reading a premature obituary that criticized him for profiting from arms sales, Nobel decided to use his fortune differently. He established the Nobel Prizes through his will. The synthetic element nobelium was named in his honor, and his legacy continues through modern companies including Dynamit Nobel and AkzoNobel, which descended from mergers involving companies he founded.
