Perfect for you if...

  • You've left a religious community and want to read someone else's honest reckoning with that loss and liberation.
  • You watch The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City and want the deeper story behind the headlines.
  • You're interested in how people rebuild their identity after a major life upheaval, especially outside the structure of organised religion.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a redemption arc where Heather finds her way back to faith or makes peace with the church.
  • You prefer memoirs that stay lighthearted or focus mainly on entertainment industry gossip rather than spiritual crisis.
  • You're seeking a book that treats Mormonism as primarily a positive institution rather than examining its harms.

About this book

Heather Gay, a reality television personality from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City and the documentary series Surviving Mormonism, reflects on her departure from the Mormon Church and her subsequent success in business, television, and single motherhood. Raised in the faith, Gay attended Brigham Young University, served a mission in France, and married within the Mormon temple. Her life as a devout Mormon ended when her marriage dissolved, along with her faith. In this memoir, she recounts discovering the darkness and damage that existed behind an outwardly picture-perfect life, while examining the tension between personal needs and religious obligation. Gay writes about her willingness to forge a new path despite losing family, friends, and her community. The memoir explores religious indoctrination, faith, and the difficult process of rebuilding life after leaving the religion that shaped her.
