About this book

The Netherlands, 1887. Lucy's twin sister Sarah falls ill, refusing to eat and speaking incoherently. She becomes obsessed with a centuries-old corpse recently unearthed on her husband's estate. A doctor attributes her condition to temporary insanity caused by brain fever. To prevent Sarah from being committed to a lunatic asylum, Lucy attempts to understand what is truly afflicting her sister—though Sarah is clearly concealing something. Lucy, too, harbors her own secrets. Sarah's condition deteriorates. She grows angry and develops an intense hunger. Lucy begins to suspect that something supernatural may be attempting to possess her sister, or that madness is consuming her. As Sarah transforms before her eyes, Lucy must confront a dark and monstrous truth to save her.
