About this book

In 1994, Interface founder and chairman Ray C. Anderson established a goal for his commercial carpet company: to take nothing from the earth that cannot be replaced by the earth. Business Lessons from a Radical Industrialist presents Anderson's challenge to industry to adopt this same objective. At that time, carpet manufacturing was a petroleum-based process that generated significant air and water pollution and substantial waste. Fifteen years after Anderson's call for change, Interface achieved measurable results: greenhouse gas emissions fell 82%, fossil fuel consumption dropped 60%, waste decreased 66%, and water use fell 75%. The company also invented and patented new machines, materials, and manufacturing processes. Commercially, Interface increased sales by 66%, doubled earnings, and raised profit margins. Anderson demonstrates through practical ideas and documented outcomes that profit and sustainability are compatible goals. Businesses can strengthen their financial performance while reducing environmental impact. The book draws on Anderson's experience transforming Interface into a more profitable company through sustainable business practices.
